A stud is essentially a threaded piece of bar. Although some studs have heads built permanently into the object they are fastened to, it resembles a machine screw without the tip. Studs are permanently attached to one item and used in conjunction with a nut to connect another part. Because this sort of stud may be welded, swaged, or bonded to bind it, it may have a small head to facilitate this. Some studs may have threads on both ends. These are referred to as stud bolts since it takes nuts. A stud can also feature a self-taping on one end that is permanent into a part and a machine thread on the other end that accepts a nut.
